Each Body will work to strengthen the practice and standing of engineering in society through the:

a) Promotion of Professional Ethics and Sustainability in the practice of engineering and as a
    subject taught in engineering programmes.

b) Promotion of ongoing and planned Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as a critical
    component in maintaining the competences, commitment and professional standards of practi-
    sing engineers and technicians.

c) Encouragement of engineers, engineering technicians and other engineering professionals to
    become role models in society by

    - actively partaking in community activities
    - writing articles about engineering both in their own professional publications and publications
      read by the public
    - engaging in public lectures and debates on behalf of the profession
    - partaking in events aimed at influencing young people to pursue careers in engineering.

The Memorandum is based on the mutual understanding that members of the DTMSI seeking
membership of the SPE will have

a) A relevant academic qualification from an academic programme accredited, approved or
    otherwise recognised by the SPE as appropriate.

b) A period of supervised or monitored initial professional development or training accredited,
    approved or otherwise recognised by the SPE.

c) A professional review conducted by the SPE.

d) Evidence of continuing education or professional development.

How Membership works

1. Corporate Members

a) A member of DTMSI, appropriately qualified and experienced holding an appropriate degree
    may apply for membership direct to SPE and may, after review, be elected as FSPE.


b) A member of DTMSI, appropriately qualified and experienced but not holding an appropriate
    degree may apply for membership and may, after review, be elected as MSPE.

Corporate members may use the designatory letters P.Eng after their name.

2. Operational Arrangements

An application from a Member of DTMSI in an engineering discipline and appropriately
qualified will be considered for membership of SPE in accordance with the SPE regulations and
may be registered accordingly.

M
embers of the DTMSI will normally be admitted as an SPE member at an appropriate grade
without an interview.


A member of either Professional Body wishing to proceed with an application to the other
Professional Body under this Memorandum shall:

a) Submit an application including details of the existing Professional Body's membership number,
    name, names of sponsors/supporters, membership status, registration status and, if EC(UK)
    registered, the date of registration.

b) Supply a concise Curriculum Vitae, including details of CPD.

Each Professional Body will provide the verification of the membership status of the applicant
and confirm that he/she is in good standing with the Professional Body.
